' 'Garden spaces and plants shrink to a new micro-level in Fionna Hill's book... Not only are they good for you but they are a great way to introduce children to food growing as the rewards are speedy.' About the Author FIONNA HILL trained as a floral designer in London and now runs her own floral design business. She has always used vegetables decoratively in her designs and has now turned to growing them to eat. Living in a high-rise apartment, Fionna discovered microgreens are ideal for those with limited space who still want to eat fresh. She has written four books, including the internationally successful Country Style Flowers. She contributes to lifestyle and garden magazines, writes travel articles and gives lectures on floral arrangement. www.fionnahill.com

How to Grow Microgreens – the tiny seedlings of herbs and vegetables – are today’ s hottest gourmet garnish, offering a multitude of colours, textures and distinct flavours, ranging from mild and subtle to spicy, hot or nutty.

Larger than sprouts and smaller than ‘ baby’ salad greens, microgreens are fantastic for those with limited garden space, as they are great to grow in containers on a terrace or windowsill.

Immediate and practical, most varieties are ready in a week or so, and you can grow them in winter. As a bonus, as well as tasting great, nutritionally microgreens pack a powerful punch; they contain higher levels of active plant compounds than mature plants or seeds.

How to Grow Microgreens provides detailed information – from planting to harvesting – for 25 popular vegetables and herbs, along with recipes and ideas on how to use them.

There are also chapters on troubleshooting, the nutritional value of microgreens and how to encourage children to grow and enjoy them.

With abundant native wildflowers, your task is even simpler: don't mow them down! This field guide identifies the plants that honey bees and native bees - as well as butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds - find most nutritious, including flowers, trees, shrubs, herbs, and pasture plants.

With guidance from the Xerces Society, the global authority on insects and other invertebrates, you can turn your backyard, farm, or commumity into a thriving pollinator habitat.

Each plant profile includes which pollinators visit the plant, the quality of honey the nectar produces, when it blooms, how best to use it in the landscape, planting tips, and spectacular photography.

The international bee crisis is threatening our global food supply, but this user-friendly field guide shows what you can do to help protect our pollinators.

The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation offers browsable profiles of 100 common flowers, herbs, shrubs, and trees that support bees, butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds.

The recommendations are simple: pick the right plants for pollinators, protect them from pesticides, and provide abundant blooms throughout the growing season by mixing perennials with herbs and annuals! 100 Plants to Feed the Bees will empower homeowners, landscapers, apartment dwellers -- anyone with a scrap of yard or a window box -- to protect our pollinators.

Consumer review about 100 Plants to Save the Bees: The Best Blooms to Nourish and Sustain Native Bees, Honey Bees, and Other Pollinators :

The news is full of reports at the moment about the potentially life changing situation we could find ourselves in if there are no longer any bees. They are vital for pollinating the flowers and some of the food we eat. This book is a good way of letting normal people help do their own little bit to protect the bees going forward and to give them more of a fighting chance. We have a small wildlife garden at the bottom of our house so we have bought some of these plants and are looking to get some more next spring/summer. Nice layout and easy to follow and read.(Read more)

The Year-Round Solar Greenhouse: How to Design and Build a Net-Zero Energy Greenhouse
About the Author Lindsey Schiller studied conventional greenhouse design and management at the University of Arizona’s Controlled Environmental Agriculture Center before delving deeply into solar greenhouse design.

With co-author Marc Plinke, she founded Ceres Greenhouse Solutions to research, design and build energy-efficient year-round greenhouses.

Lindsey has designed, toured and helped build hundreds of energy-efficient greenhouses spanning small residential structures to acre-size commercial facilities.

Marc Plinke, an inventor-innovator with a PhD in engineering, started his career as a chemical and process engineer working for Gore Technologies.

He later retrofitted his family's 1950's Boulder, CO ranch home into a net-zero-energy home, spurring a second career in green building design.

Marc has spent the past decade applying his expertise in green building and engineering mindset to building better greenhouses, with the intention of enabling people to grow their own food sustainably, year-round.

Comprehensive coverage of passive solar greenhouse design including material selection, building methods and how to store thermal energy using a variety of simple and innovative strategies.

Over a dozen case studies provide real-life inspiration, capped off with how-to guidance for building a durable, energy-efficient greenhouse.

Variations include underground and aquaponic greenhouses and integrating solar panels to grow off-grid, year-round.

...a superb dip-into introduction to the fascinating world of garden history" (Country Life) Book Description The third in the acclaimed How to Read.

.. series, this is a beautifully illustrated guide to everything you see in a garden, what it means and how it came to be there. See all

Richard Taylor, author of the best-selling How to Read a Church, joins forces with garden historian Andrew Eburne to produce the ultimate guide to historic and modern gardens.

Gardens are amongst the fastest-growing visitor attractions today - in the UK alone 15 million people will visit a garden this year.

How to Read an English Garden is the essential book for every garden lover. It provides an account of the different elements of gardens of all ages and explains their meaning and their history: here, you'll find the answer to such questions as: when were tulips introduced into our gardens, and what was 'tulip-mania'? What is a knot-garden, and what was the origin of its design? Who was 'Capability' Brown, and how did he get his name? Why are mazes such a common feature in English garden design? In addition, the book explains how lawns, flowerbeds, trees and ponds came to be a feature not just of grand houses but of gardens everywhere.

Among the many subjects covered are: garden design, plant introductions and collectors, kitchen gardens, water gardens, and garden styles from around the world: English, American, Chinese and Moorish to name just a few.

Clearly laid out and beautifully illustrated, How to Read an English Garden brings historic and modern gardens to life: a book to accompany garden visitors everywhere, or to be enjoyed and dipped into at home.

" --Bookwatch "An introduction to the myriad species of these insects and all they do in your garden. This book will give you new appreciation and a deeper understanding of their vital roles on this planet." --The American Gardener "This book provides an entertaining and useful introduction to a vast portion of the insect world." --Garden in a City About the Author Eric Grissell - a member of the Garden Writers Association as well as a half dozen entomological and horticultural societies - has written two books of essays on gardening and a popular book entitled Insects and Gardens.

His latest book, Bees, Wasps, and Ants: The Indispensable Role of Hymenoptera in Gardens, examines the undeniably important role these often maligned insects play in our lives and gardens.

Grissell grew up in San Francisco where he acquired the basics of gardening at an early age. Many of his youthful exploits (such as stalking salamanders at night and working in neighborhood gardens to supplement his meager allowance) were touched upon in his first book, Thyme on My Hands, published by Timber Press in 1987.

Torn between the seemingly artificial world of gardens and the natural world of insects, Grissell entered the University of California, Davis, where he ultimately decided to major in entomology with a minor in botany.

His postgraduate research centered on the systematics of predatory and parasitic wasps. Grissell went on to work for three decades as a research entomologist, first with the Florida Department of Agriculture, then with the United States Department of Agriculture in the Systematic Entomology Laboratory.

As well as conducting research trips and publishing a hundred scientific papers, Grissell was in charge of curating and building sections of the Smithsonian's insect collection.

In addition, he co-taught a biennial, week-long workshop in parasitic wasps over a 22-year period, was a cofounding member of the International Society of Hymenopterists, and served as editor of the Journal of Hymenoptera Research for seven years.

After having gardened in Mediterranean, subtropical, and temperate climates, Eric now practices what he refers to as Darwinian Victory Gardening in the high desert grasslands of southeastern Arizona.

According to the principles of DVG, anything that survives in his garden is considered a victory. Even weeds.

Few insects are more important than bees, wasps, and ants. They maintain the garden's biological balance, fertilize vegetables, fruits, and flowers, and recycle nutrients within the soil. It's no exaggeration to say that a garden can't be understood without an understanding of its insects. "Bees, Wasps, and Ants" explores the importance of the Hymenoptera and explains how gardeners can encourage (or discourage) them in the garden.

Part One includes a summary of their biology and a tour of what role they play in each part of the garden. Part Two takes a closer look at the individual groups within the order, including sawflies, horntails, woodwasps, parasitic wasps, predatory wasps, bees, and ants.

"Bees, Wasps, and Ants" is sure to persuade even the most insect-phobic reader to invite these fascinating creatures into their gardens.

Gardening with Chickens Plans and Plants for You and Your Hens
Gardening with Chickens: Plans and Plants for You and Your Hens
Review "But can a garden—especially a tempting vegetable garden—peacefully coexist with hungry, inquisitive chickens, with their potential to eat tender seedlings, and shred plants with their scratching? It’s a smart subject for a book, and the answer, says Gardening With Chickens author Lisa Steele, is that they can not only coexist, but each can benefit the other.

" - GardenSmartTV"If you’re looking for a great guide on raising chickens in your garden, I suggest getting Steele’s book.

" (Community Table/Parade.com 2017-04-02)"Overall, “Gardening with Chickens” is an excellent how-to vegetable gardening book, woven throughout with information on chickens, as if they were simply another standard option in food growing, just like raised beds.

" (Phoenixvillenews.com 2017-02-09)"Raising Backyard Ducks" episode with Lisa Steele (Living Homegrown Podcast Living Homegrown Podcast 2017-01-20) Review “This is a must read for any gardener considering chickens or chicken keeper considering a garden…there is so much gold in this book.

” (Sara Bendrick, Landscape contractor/designer and national TV host)“Lisa has found that perfect balance we all strive for—living symbiotically with the land around her.

This book is a beautiful roadmap for how we can all have a piece of that in our lives, no matter where we live.” (Georgia Pellegrini, chef, TV personality, and author of Modern Pioneering, Girl Hunter, and Food Heroes)“If you've enjoyed Lisa's popular blog, you'll definitely love this book, which is written in the same encouraging, confident, and often humorous voice.

Beautifully photographed and filled with eye-catching illustrations, this will become an instant classic…” (Niki Jabbour, author of Groundbreaking Food Gardens and The Year Round Vegetable Gardener)“Lisa’s writings have been my go-to chicken resource.

Gardening with Chickens taught me new ways to garden as I continue my chicken-keeping journey. A must read!” (Helen Yoest, author of Gardening with Confidence) See all

Topiary in the Garden: How to Clip, Train and Shape Plants
About the Author Jenny Hendy is the author of many gardening books on a wide range of subjects from topiary to container gardening and garden construction, though planning and design have always been her speciality.

Jenny's fascination for plants and wildlife led her to her gaining an Honours degree in Classical Botany. She worked as a researcher and writer for one of Britains leading gardening magazines and since turning freelance has established a career as an internationally published author, lecturer and radio broadcaster.

In addition to writing and presenting, Jenny runs a thriving garden design consultancy.

This wonderful book is the perfect introduction to the world of topiary. A fascinating introduction examines the history behind the art and is followed by an exploration of the many topiary styles. The first part of the book looks at the essential ideas associated with topiary design. The second half of the book is full of practical advice on how to create topiary in the garden. It opens with ten easy-to-follow step-by-step projects followed by a comprehensive directory of plants suitable for topiary. With more than 100 stunning images, this little guide is a celebration of the popularity of this 'living' art form, as well as an invaluable handbook for both experienced and new topiary gardens.
